Quote of the Week:
“On Thursday Pickin’ days, my children awake to find gifts under the TB tree.” –The Daily Wit
I can’t think of a clever intro this week, feeling a little empty, so just stare blankly into this open space for a moment and get yourself psyched up for another huge week of pickin’.
Now then, TB lost my POTW, falling to 4-5 for the year. I went 2-3 on bonus picks leaving my record at 16-21-3. Ouch. Overall, the TBU continues it’s late season surge. We went 14-7 on POTW’s (now 104-89 on the year) and 30-30 on bonus picks. Harmony and Larry got the music votes, but CTJ gets Harmony’s points since he came in second for song and she doesn’t really need them since she posts purely for the sake of art. Plus twos are noted for Halloween tunage participation.
TKH led the way last week, in a feel good triumph. It’s sort of like when Prairie View won and broke a ten year losing streak back in the day. And of course Tiny is still kicking all our our asses, weaving in and out of Thursday Pickin’ pursuers like Cameron Newton running with a laptop through a frathouse social.
Last week’s standings, the top 14 won their POTW, bonus picks only are in parentheses and music points are noted:

I love Thursdays! Can we continue with tunes occassionally, even when TP is over?
They scatter like roaches after football season, Tiny. Good luck.
I think that’s a good idea. And not all the roaches scatter. Some actually hang around for the stimulating topics, witty repartee, and high brow humor that characterize the TB brand.
Blind Melon “No Rain” ~ Because when the weather is right, I like to dress up like a bumble bee and dance in the rain.

Asking for our recent downloads? Brilliant, TB! I am really digging the tunes this week. The TBU has such wonderful, eclectic musical taste (especially you, Larry!). Here are my recent iTunes additions:
Natural Forces – Lyle Lovett (You know those songs you love from the second you hear them? This is one of mine.)
Head Like a Hole (Live) – Nine Inch Nails
Dance Hall Days – Wang Chung
There is a Light That Never Goes Out – The Smiths (Who else but Morrissey can sing a beautiful song about being killed by a double-decker bus?!?)
SOTW: Closer to the Edge – 30 Seconds to Mars
Good one RSR- I’ve seen that lead singer before. He’s done some acting correct?
Zeek ~ You are right. Most memorably (for me) My So Called Life. But that was back when MTV still played some music videos. Here is a link to his IMDB page, for his more recent stuff.
RSR ~ I really like 30 Seconds to Mars but I have a hard time watching their videos..not sure why.
Zeek – good eye. Jared Leto’s his name. He was a sentry in Fight Club, the white headed dude with the mangled eye. He’s in Requiem for a Dream, too, a really great, super dark movie.
Harmony – so funny you say that about their videos, I’m just the opposite – I’m obsessed with them. Must be the draw of Jordan Cantalano…
Ha! It must be. I think it just irks me out every time I see Jared Leto singing..it looks so unnatural to me. Perhaps, I prefer him as an actor. IDK.

(I dig any song that works “panty snatcher” into the lyrics)
I hope all of you downloaders are doing so on legal sites and not stealing from the record industry. See below. Interesting argument by her—Instead of paying for this, I would rather use the money for other things. Oh, ok. I am going to try that at the grocery store tonight and at a car dealership tomorrow afternoon. Think of all the free stuff that we could all get using her flawless logic!! Only in America. I hope they garnish her wages.
_____________
MINNEAPOLIS — A Minnesota woman ordered to pay a recording industry trade group $1.5 million for illegally sharing music online doesn’t plan to pay those damages as her attorneys continue to argue the amount is unconstitutional, she said Thursday.
A federal jury found Wednesday that Jammie Thomas-Rasset, of Brainerd, must pay $62,500 per song — for a total of $1.5 million — for illegally violating copyrights on 24 songs. This was the third jury to consider damages in her case, and each has found that she must pay — though different amounts.
And after each time, the single mother of four has said she can’t pay.
“I can’t afford to pay any amount. It’s not a matter of won’t, it’s a matter of ‘I can’t,'” Thomas-Rasset said Thursday. “Any amount that I pay to them is money that I could use to feed my children. Any amount that I pay to them is money I could use to clothe my kids, and pay my mortgage so my kids have a place to sleep.”
The Recording Industry Association of America has said it found Thomas-Rasset shared more than 1,700 songs

As I sit here drinking Heineken and watching The Unforgiven (great movie….and great Metallica song), I came up with a couple of Bonus (non home dawg) picks:
TCU -5
AL -6.5
My vote for LOTW: Sweet. Is that the first Kesha reference on the TB site? All of her songs are about getting drunk and hooking up. Unfortunately, my 6 year old daughter loves her. I am doomed in a few years.
My vote for SOTW: Harmony “What I Am” – mysterious and just plain crazy lyrics, but a great tune. I also liked the video for “Are you in”.
My tunes:
Earlier in the week I had thought that I would include Beastie Boys “Girls” to the list, but I forgot about it when I finally compiled my list. Good to see that they made it to this weeks TP.
Hey TB – I thought I was 3-2 for last week not the other way around – just checking,
Florida – 14 1/2
USM – 10
Nevada – 11
Missouri – 4
Utah + 5
POTW – Oklahoma – 3
Since I rarely ever download music my songs are from the good old days at the Shingle Mill:
You Never Even Called Me By My Name – David Allen Coe
Love Shack – B52s
Piece of My Heart – Janis Joplin
Pretty Woman – Roy Orbison
Brown Eyed Girl – Van Morrison
Song of the week is the nastiest song I ever heard as sung by Stuart Douglas:
Don’t Bite the D*#^ that F!^><S You by David Allen Coe
Funny Story behind that one and a few of the others from that time.
I made these picks last night and posted them here, but they’re gone. Or at least I don’t see my comment as I scroll down this page. Anyway, here are my picks, and I promise I have no clue whether any of these games have started much less what the score might be at this moment.
Iowa -17½ (POTW)
MICHIGAN -3
WAKE FOREST +3
PENN STATE -6
Wisconsin -19½
Minnesota +24′
Now I’ve looked at the scores and it’s effing obvious that I didn’t look at the scores before reposting b/c none of my picks are panning out yet. Damn you TB for making me care about this pickin’ crap!
I put bama down two times, so ore st -5 is my other bonus pick in their place
yea Harmony. It’s good to see those guys are still around.
Sweet SOTW
smilEy LOTW
RSR, I am all over the place. I just dig good tunes. Would have liked to have been able to go with you guys to Chicago and catch STP. Holly and I were there two weeks prior and saw The Eagles, Dixie Chicks, and Keith Urban. We try to work in a couple of shows when we are travellin. Maybe a list of best live shows or live shows attended in 2010 after Thursday Pickin’ is over. TB?
