Thursday Pickin XII

Quote of the Week     “As shadows fall, I pass a small cafe where we would dance at night; And I can’t help recalling how it how it felt to kiss and hold you tight; Well, how can I forget you, girl? When there is always something there to remind me.”   —Burt Bacharach, as performed by Naked Eyes

It took me a few days, but I kept searching because I knew the genius of “Ed” had a reason for his horrendous post. It finally came to me when I saw his vote for Zeek for song of the week. The “blank stare” theme. Brilliant. I doff my cap to you sir. Zeek won a 7-way tiebreaker for song of the week by virtue of getting one vote for two songs. I went with the Naked Eyes tune for obvious reasons as this week’s QOTD. List went to BR and Fig was a runaway winner for his Chicago Theme in tribute to our new President. The Obama transition team has been notified of this honor and I expect them to feature Fig as guest DJ at the inauguration as a measure of gratitude.

There were eleven POTW winners this week, listed first as always with bonus picks if applicable in parentheses. Here are last week’s standings:

  1. Ed–TB used his powers of arbitrary benevolence to award a special one-time bonus for (excuse me while a go get a drink of water) high brow humor, using the lowest of brow tunes. Brow. That’s a funny word.
  2. Fig–(3-2); the People’s Choice for Theme of the Week
  3. RMac–the first real liberal I ever knew
  4. BR–(1-3); List of the Week
  5. Smily–(1-0); one point for a nice MSU rant
  6. Pitalo–(3-2)
  7. Travellinbaen–(3-2)
  8. Larry–(2-2)
  9. Stone–(1-3)
  10. OB Lefty–(1-4); one point for patriotism
  11. MD–(0-1)
  12. JLM–(4-1); bonus points pending if we get a story here from an actual Crimson Tidean
  13. Greeg–(3-0); hard luck
  14. Zeek–(1-4); song of the week award kept it from being worse
  15. Feidt’s Follies–(4-2)
  16. TKH–(3-2)
  17. RSR–got a vote in each category of tunes
  18. Sweet–(0-5); since everybody else was really bad, Sweet goes here for bonus points on futility
  19. Supercynic–(1-4); sympathy point for surgery
  20. Face–(0-1); but almost got a vote from TB for Night Ranger

About travellinbaen

I'm a 40 year old lawyer living in Ridgeland, Mississippi. I'm several years and a couple hundred miles removed from most of my old running buddies so I started the blog to provide an outlet for many of the observations and ideas that used to be the subjects of our late night/happy hour/halftime conversations and arguments.

Gridiron- I am fresh out of the ER dealing with a bad case of Gout in my ankle and under influence of morphine so my picks should be good considering I am not in my right mind. We’ll see.

    POTW-Okla St. -16′

    Tex-12′
    UGA-8′
    NEB-7
    Tulsa-4
    Wake Forest-4

My music theme this week is a dedication to my lovely wife Jenny, who is definitely the best thing that ever happened to me, and my saviour and soulmate. These songs do not do her justice but it’s the best I can do under the circumstances.(see above)

    SOTW-The Reason- Hoobastank

I Love You- Climax Blues Band

I Just Wanna Be Your Everything- Andy Gibb

    3 Times a Lady- Commodores

    I’ll Be There- Temptations

Fools Rush In- Aaron “Elvis” Presley

  2. Madd Dawg says:

    Zeek,
Number 1: that’s TMI on the medical issue.
Number 2: don’t get all sappy on us.

Can I make a motion that, henceforth, no one is permitted to make posts when under the influence of post-surgical painkillers?

  3. Gout.

    That’s a funny word.

  4. Madd Dawg says:

    POTW: Oregon St. -3

    Others
    UGA -8′
    UL Monroe +20′
    USM -2′

Music portion: Stoner, you mentioned seeing GWAR in concert on the concerts blog a few weeks ago. They are coming to both New Orleans and Mobile in December. Should I make the effort to go?

  5. Jessie Lou says:

Would that be considered buzzed and blogging as opposed to drunk and dialing? We say “gouch” since that is what it feels like apparently.

  6. Adam says:

You should go see GWAR if you like a band dressed in giant latex suits that spew fake blood as they chop each other up. The show is designed to offend everyone. If you leave without being offended, it was an off night. If you go, tell me if they still have the giant meat grinder on stage. At Tips in N.O. they covered the speakers with plastic so the fake blood would not ruin them. It is interesting. You do not go for the music.

My Pick is ULaMo getting 21 points.

    I will supplement with tunes.

  7. larry says:

    MSU +20′
    Clemson -11
    Kentucky -4′
    East Carolina +2′

The Rebs are playing again this week, so I will take them as my POTW -20′

    Little Ways – Dwight Yoakum
Let’s Get It On – Marvin Gaye
Stay All Night – Willie Nelson
Bald Headed Woman(aka More Than A Woman) – for BR – The Bee Gees

SOTW – Garden Party – Ricky Nelson

  8. larry says:

Gout always makes me cringe. He’s got the Gout. It just sounds like something you would not want people to know.

  9. RockStarRambler says:

    South Carolina +20

Counting is big at our house right now, so here is a tribute to numbers:

    1 2 3 4 – Feist

Three Little Birds – Bob Marley

Seven Nation Army – The White Stripes

16 Military Wives – The Decemberists

    Pop Song 89 – REM

bonus tune: Three is a Magic Number – Schoolhouse Rock

  10. ZEEK says:

Gout does sound like you have jungle rot or something. For those curious it is a build up of uric acid in the body that sort of calcifies around the joints (usually big toe or ankle, sometimes the hand) and causes swelling that compresses nerves against bones[and calcification] and causes extreme pain. I promise you it causes pain that jungle rot could not even begin to touch. If you can remember the scene in Stephen King’s “Misery” where the psycho nurse (Kathy Bates) puts the 4×4 between James Caan’s legs and proceeds to “hobble” him with a slegehammer, that is what it feels like—CONSTANTLY!!! So, Madd Dawg, BL*W ME, I cannot help it if you are a Philistine who does not have a romantic bone in his body, while I am a modern day Renaissance Man.

  11. Fig E says:

    Mississippi State +20′ @ ALABAMA

  13. Madd Dawg says:

    Zeek,
you can be romantic all you want bro in your PRIVATE moments with your woman, but do I have to hear about it? C’mon man!

    Stoner,
Life is about experiences right? So I plan to see GWAR in December in either Mobile or New Orleans IF I can find someone to go with me. Unfortunately, most of my friends have lost their nads nonsurgically through simple nonuse and have sprouted vageens through the magic of evolution as nature has dictated that the female part would be more appropriate for them (no offense intended to the ladies on the site, of course).

I will also be seeing MiniKiss on Saturday night at the Beau Rivage, so come on out if anyone wants to see a KISS ocover band made up entirely of midgets—and who in their right mond would not want to see that?

    Metallica concert countdown: 9 days………

  15. Ed says:

    Dear Baen,

Thank you for your patience, understanding, and willingness to dig deep. I so loved the Hee Haw post and it was not well with my soul to follow that one up with such no talent so-bad-it’s-good tripe. But it had to be done for the good of the blog cause that which doesn’t kill us…makes us pretty damn sick.

If you grew up with older siblings, you had to listen to their music, usually through a wall, a closed and locked door or while they begrudgingly drove you someplace. I did this until I saved enough grass cutting money to purchase a set of earphones and a Radio Shack Realistic Stereo. My sister is 5 years older than me and she listened to tunes while she got ready for school, church, dates, car trips, dinner, going to the mall, doing chores…pretty much all the time. Her favorite albums are easy to deduce: Soundtrack from the movie Grease and The Eagles Hotel California. No other album came close to the play those two got. But of interest to me, at this time, are the singles she bought and the lyrics that struck and stuck with me and so…

This week: My big sister’s most played 45’s.

    6. The Night Chicago Died – Paper Lace
“And I asked someone who said about a hundred cops are dead”
    5. It Never Rains in Southern California – Albert Hammond

“And as he started to go, she said, ‘Billy, keep your head low,oh,oh!’
    3. Sir Duke – Stevie Wonder
“Music knows it is and always will be one of the things that life just won’t quit”
    2. Brandy – Looking Glass
“But my life, my lover, my lady is the sea”
    1. Hooked on a Feeling – Blue Swede (All respect to BJ Thomas but…)

Personal Jesus – Depeche Mode(originally) but like Johnny Cash’s version better

be sure and let the TB community know the stats. The force seeks balance, so another marked child is unlikely.

I can’t believe I passed up a chance to have a baby pickin contest.

You could have a name contest or a pick the date, time, weight, length contest.

  30. Madd Dawg says:

If you closed your eyes, they sounded pretty decent playing some old KISS plus a little Ozzy, Crue and GNR mixed in, but watching it was a little disturbing. They looked like they were having fun though—better than a 9 to 5 job I suppose.
