Saturday Football Thread

TB’s in Oxford where the Bama-Ole Miss game will be played this afternoon. My Bullies play at 11 30 so I’m gonna try and watch as much of that debacle as I can while getting in a bit of tailgaiting. Looks like the storm front that was supposed to sit on us until Tuesday has either moved on or broken up. The forecast is now only 10% chance of rain and a sunny day is expected. Bama nation has invaded Oxford in force. I can’t wait to immerse myself in a sea of Rebel-Rohtide humanity.

I REALLY like my picks this week. For some reason I have a sense of foreboding though. Maybe its because today is the last game that State has a chance to win to realistically salvage a chance at a six win season and I just don’t see it happening. The oddsmakers started State out a 3.5 point dog but they’ve moved to a 1.5 point fave. Unless the gamblers think Houston is point shaving, which I doubt, its just John Q. Public being wrong, in his usual fashion. For those of you seeking entertainment purposes only with your college football, a little nugget–the ‘dogs porous pass defense will be “bolstered” today with a true freshman making his first start at safety. Another true frosh made his first start at corner last week. Run heavy Georgia Tech proceeded to throw for some 250 yards.

Anyway, random thoughts on the games go below, if you are so inclined. I’ll be back later with a report on my day. My main goal is to spot our own gentleman of leisure, but I hear the lonesome loser will be on campus and his name changin cousin too.

I'm a 40 year old lawyer living in Ridgeland, Mississippi. I'm several years and a couple hundred miles removed from most of my old running buddies so I started the blog to provide an outlet for many of the observations and ideas that used to be the subjects of our late night/happy hour/halftime conversations and arguments.

I found out this week that one of our favorite players from PHS has signed with MS State – Vick Ballard. We were disappointed he didn’t get a scholarship to a bigger school 2 years ago but he went to Perk and has continued to shine there. There was a nice article on him in the paper this week and it said he had committed to State. I look forward to watching him play on TV someday.

  2. Going in to this week he was leading the nation in yardage gained. I’m pleased with this pickup.

I don’t think his coach even tried to sell him (for lack of a better word) after reading the article. I’ve never met him but feel like I have after following him this long. He was more impressive than DeFlanders in high school and did not get the recognition he deserved then in my humble opinion.

Same coach has on a lovely losing streak at PHS. There is some talent there but I do not feel like he is making the most of it. I’m not alone in these thoughts. I’m envious of the day you have ahead of you. Can’t beat the Grove on a Fall Saturday. I’m off to help in Shelly’s store for a few hours and hope to be home in time for the kick off.

State has a couple good RB commits. JC recruits at that. I think they can contribute sooner rather than later. They need to get on some OL recruits though. I am optimistic about today. I think they will score with Houston and I am predicting a defensive play like a big INT or maybe even a defensive score. They are gonna need it as I dont think they can stop Houston outright. Wish I was there with a cowbell but I am going to next weekends game in Murfreesboro Tenn. Leaving a day early for Pigeon Forge and going through there. I am reluctantly training my boy to be a State Fan. Probably a bad idea but I cant see any other choice. Think in the long run it will build character and humility. Maybe he will never know the futility I have endured. And maybe one day, he may can break the “Curse of the Keg.”

Unlike you poor Bulldog fans, we Rebs have a serious confrontation on our hands. Very up and down about our chances. I think the defense will have to win the game for us. If the “O” line protects, we have a chance. An early score to get the home crowd going is paramount. We’ll see.

TB– fake Larry is also roaming the campus, so look out for him too. If you see our man of leisure shake his hand for me. Wish I was there. Hotty freakin’ Toddy BABY!!!!!!!!

I’ve never been so mad after a damn state game. That ruined their MF season. Refs absolutely sucked. Mullen needs to learn to be a game coach. Makes some very bad ingame choices. I think he’s improved State but they gotta win when they should. They shoulda won that one. Tyson Lee also sucks but two of his TO’s shouldnt have even happened if the refs dont suck and Mullen realizes he can review sh&*#y ref calls. pisses me off. F@#kn State.
